Madeleen is a qualified, professionally trained beauty therapist and has more than 10 years of waxing experience.
2. Schedule wisely
Your skin may be more sensitive when you are nearing your period. It is thus advisable to schedule an appointment for no less than a week before your period is due; or ideally, schedule your appointment for the week after your period.
3. Trimming
If you do not usually shave the area it is advisable to trim hair to the length of a grain of rice; if the hair is too long it makes the waxing procedure more painful and difficult than it need be. That being said, if you usually do shave the area it is advisable to stop shaving at least a week prior to your appointment so that the hair will be long enough to be gripped effectively by the wax. Exfoliating lightly before your appointment is advisable..
4. Pain management
If you are concerned about pain during your beauty treatment it is wise to take an aspirin-free over-the-counter painkiller about 30mins before your appointment. Aspirin is known to thin the blood and is thus not an ideal choice.
5. Alcohol
It is also not wise to drink alcohol before a waxing appointment. You may think it will numb the pain but in fact, alcohol tightens pores and will make your beauty treatment that much more painful; and the hair that much more difficult to remove.
6. A shower cures all
Take a shower right before your appointment. If you are stressed the warm water will help you relax and you will feel more confident knowing you are squeaky-clean and fresh for your appointment.
7. Avoid the gym after your appointment
Tight-fitting underwear and pants are not recommended for the first 24hrs following a wax as they may cause chafing and unnecessary irritation to the area. Excessive sweating is also something to be avoided. Skip the gym for one day and take your new, cosmopolitan self out for a congratulatory drink instead.
Remember it hurts far less than you might imagine.
